Star Trek Discovery Movie
The movie starts with Sonequa Martin-Green ( aka Micheal Burham) meeting with Jason Isaacs (aka Captain Gabriel Lorca) for the first time. The room is dimly lit. He explains something in a lower voice about having an eye condition which requires low light. But similar to most of his statements, this also had some hidden information. This is the start of the Star Trek Discovery which is a TV adaptation of Star Trek Movie.
Lorca’s lair is a mile apart from the interior on “Star Trek Discovery” which is much shady. Micheal Burnham continuously deals with the dark and gloomy corridors with murky settings. This successfully conveys the message that this not going to be your father’s “Star Trek”. But it could be similar to your mother if she is a fan of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” as it is remembered as the best of the TV efforts of Trek venture.
The following seasons of “Deep Space Nine” showcased a long chain of diverging characters which were lead by Benjamin Sisko. He was an African American played on screen by Avery Brooks. They fought grinding fights and muddled wars which took away their energy and tested their values. But it also made their friendship and love bonds strong. It was converted into a serial which was a rare event at that time and especially for a Star Trek series. It became more character driven with time. At the first go Star Trek discovery looks like something to play a tribute to that “Deep Space Nine” spirit. The moving plot has many shades which are jumbled through the first three episodes and continue to be the same. It’s extremely capable lead faces many challenging situations as Sisko also did.
Discovery is still to prove itself a deserving inheritor of the famous “The Next Generation”, “Deep Space Nine” and “Battlestar Galactica”. But the changes for that to happen are really bright. It only has to follow the ambiguous and complex path set by its predecessor to produce a character-oriented, space-based sci-fi show which has been missing from the TV screen for a long time. It is too early to claim anything but this CBS All Access drama sure has great potential to break than the usual array of the alien of the week formula.
The beginning hours of the show are full of hypnotizing space drama and exciting interstellar fights. The dramas carry on the optimism of the Gene Roddenberry’s vision. As per the Star Trek tradition, it tests the choices of well-intended characters coming face to face with the situations of compromise, mysteries, alien cultures and moral dilemmas. It could be out in a time war category but it is not particularly grim. There some comic moments which hits that bull’s eye without drifting away from the main purpose of the drama.
The flavor of the original Star Trek is embedded into the Discovery’s premise. It is a prequel that set ten years before the events of that program. The communication devices also look like the previous models of the devices used in other movies. But it has one element which unites all the Star Trek movies which are the Jefferies Tubes.
The Gestation process for Discovery was fairly difficult so there are certain setbacks. This also includes the left of the original Showrunner Bryan Fuller during the mapping out of season 1. There are few characters who are arcs don’t quite add up leaving some of the aspects of the show unclear. The dangerous nemesis in this world is very conveniently garbed and often have slow and dull scenes. The actors have tried to act their best but the imposed facial expressions are a major give away. Another commonly spread complain is that the New Federation uniforms are hideous and doesn’t do justice to their role.
But these are just minor setbacks. The main mission of the Star Trek Discovery is making people care about Burnham and it works exceptionally well in that regard.Martin Green has proved to be charming and powerful in the lead role, giving writers scope to develop an interesting psychological territory to be yet explored. Her personal and professional bonds are the most complicated.
The success of Discovery depends on how it handles these both aspects together. The whole cast made a very fine first impression overall. There is a lot to say and a lot to predict about this new Star Trek venture, I think we would stay tuned to see the final outcome of the show. May it prove to be a treat for the fans of the series. There are many speculations about this new series but only time will tell how it would turn out to be.
